About Me
Mae Facundo (@maebaebay) is a Filipino-Canadian artist whose work lives at the intersection of art, sport, community, and culture.Although self-taught, Mae's creative practice has always been rooted in people. After pursuing art more seriously in 2022 through grassroots exhibitions, collaborations, and community-based projects, she quickly discovered that her work extended beyond creating artwork alone. For Mae, art is a tool for connection; a way to bring people together, create belonging, and tell stories that deserve to be seen. Her practice is guided by four core values: representation, community, play, and human connection. Through workshops, activations, public art, and personal work, she strives to create spaces where people feel welcomed, inspired, and seen.Drawing inspiration from everyday dreamers, youth, athletes, and community builders, Mae hopes her work reminds others to stay connected to who they are, embrace what brings them joy, and continue pursuing the dreams that make them feel most alive.
ARTIST STATEMENT

My work explores belonging, identity, play, and the connections that shape us. As a Filipino-Canadian woman raised between cultures, I spent much of my life searching for spaces where I felt fully seen. Growing up in a predominantly white community, I often felt caught between worlds—never quite Filipino enough in some spaces and never fully belonging in others. These experiences continue to inform the way I create and the stories I choose to tell.Basketball and sport became one of the first places where I experienced belonging. On the court, identity felt secondary to connection, teamwork, and joy. It was a space where I felt free to be myself, and that sense of freedom continues to influence my creative practice today. My work is rooted in the belief that art can create the same feeling. Whether through paintings, community activations, workshops, or collaborative projects, I am interested in building experiences that bring people together and invite participation. I see art not as something to be observed from a distance, but as a catalyst for conversation, connection, and community.
Representation remains central to my practice. I create for those who have felt unseen, for those carving their own path, and for the young dreamers who are learning to trust themselves and their ambitions. Inspired by everyday people who choose courage, creativity, and authenticity, my work celebrates the power of showing up as you are.At its core, my practice is an investment in people. If my work can help someone feel seen, connected, inspired, or a little less alone, then it has done exactly what it was meant to do.
